Blindness investigations

We understand that having a blind pet can be distressing and that diagnosing the cause of blindness quickly is important especially if treatment is a possibility. Our team are able to perform the following investigations where appropriate:

  • Photopic and scotopic maze testing
  • Indirect fundoscopy
  • Colorimetric pupillary light reflex testing
  • Ocular ultrasonography
  • Gonioscopy
  • Electroretinography

In all cases clinical findings, further investigations, possible treatment options and prognosis will be discussed to ensure clients feel fully informed regarding their pet’s condition.

Cataract surgery

Our state of the art operating facilities and equipment allow us to perform phacoemulsification for the treatment of cataracts, including:

  • Diabetic cataracts
  • Cataracts secondary to trauma
  • Hereditary cataracts
  • Cataracts related to advanced age

Corneal ulcer management

Our experienced team are able to manage all cases of corneal ulceration from indolent ulcers to descemetocoeles. Medical management along with surgical treatment in select cases may be employed using specialised equipment. This may include:

  • Diamond-burr debridement of indolent ulceration
  • Corneal collagen cross-linking for melting ulcers
  • Use of the operating microscope to perform corneal microsurgery on deep ulcers or to repair ruptured ulcers. Autologous or artificial corneal grafting techniques may be employed on a case-dependent basis.

Entropion and facial surgery

Whether it be only one eyelid affected or more extensive cases of excessive facial skin, our team offer a range of treatment options for entropion which may include one or more of the following:

  • Temporary eyelid tacking
  • Subdermal hyaluronate filler injections
  • Permanent eyelid surgery
  • Facelift surgery

Entropion is assessed on a case-by-case basis as the nature of correction required varies widely between patients. Some cases may require several staged procedures for correction to be adequate. Please refer to our ‘common conditions’ section for more information regarding entropion.

Ophthalmic consultations

An initial consultation with one of our experienced ophthalmologists is scheduled to take up to one hour. A detailed history will be taken and a thorough ophthalmic examination will be performed to include where appropriate:

    • Vision assessment
    • Neuro-ophthalmic evaluation
    • Slit lamp biomicroscopy to evaluate the ocular structures with increased magnification
    • Direct and indirect fundoscopy to thoroughly assess the retina
    • Schirmer Tear Testing
    • Tonometry
    • Fluorescein dye application to assess ocular surface health and the nasolacrimal system
    • Further investigations and some minor procedures may also be performed at the time of initial consultation and could include:
    • Ocular ultrasonography
    • Sampling of ulcers, lesions or ocular discharge
    • Blood sampling
    • Simple foreign body removal
    • Gonioscopy
    • Nasolacrimal duct flushing
    • Maze testing

All clinical findings, further investigations and treatment options will be discussed at the time and estimates of cost will be provided throughout.

Ophthalmic emergencies

Our team are fully equipped to deal with ophthalmic emergencies including:

    • Deep ulcers, melting ulcers and descemetocoeles
    • Globe rupture
    • Penetrating foreign bodies
    • Glaucoma
    • Ocular trauma
    • Hyphaema
    • Proptosis
    • Exophthalmos
    • Sudden onset blindness
